The Role of Social Media in Navigating Divorce Successfully
In this episode of the Amicable Divorce Network (ADN) podcast, Rob Roseman, creator of WTF Divorce Podcast, and Kristy Tiesing, team member for both WTF Divorce and ADN, engage in a conversation on the role social media can play when navigating divorce. Alongside Tracy Ann Moore-Grant, the Amicable Divorce Podcast host and founder of the Amicable Divorce Network, Rob and Kristy discuss utilizing social media for education, the ability to connect with divorce professionals online, and the value of humor in the divorce process. This episode offers practical advice for anyone considering a divorce and underscores the importance of an online social media presence for divorce professionals.
During his divorce, Rob found that there was little information online about divorce, especially for divorcing men. About 80% of divorces are initiated by women, often blindsiding men who haven’t had much time to prepare and end up hiring the first attorney they find on Google. After his divorce, he used his marketing background to start a podcast sharing useful information on initiating the divorce process with guest divorce professionals sharing their advice. Rob emphasizes the importance of selecting the right attorney for you instead of hiring the first person who appears in an online search. Kristy and Rob suggest that people going through a divorce can get some comic relief through social media, educate themselves on the divorce process, and get in touch with professionals who can help.
“If you’re starting off your divorce on a bad foot, you can screw up a few years of your life when it’s most important to your kids. You may hire the wrong attorney because you didn’t do enough research, selecting the first person who appeared in an online search. Our mission is to help people make better decisions to get their divorce done faster, to save money, and to set themselves up for success. It’s crucial to take the time to make the best decision possible, instead of feeling pressure to choose a lawyer quickly.”
-Rob Roseman, WTF Divorce Podcast
Rob shares that the biggest complaint most people have is that they didn’t plan their divorce correctly, making it lengthy and more expensive. Quickly hiring a lawyer and checking out mentally is appealing for many, however, they may benefit from gathering a team of professionals like a divorce coach, therapist, or financial advisor who will help them plan how they envision their future. Rob and Tracy also discuss that social media is a unique opportunity for potential clients to get to know attorneys and ask questions online, as well as educate themselves on the process. They suggest that video content can help potential clients get to know the vibe and personality of an attorney before ever reaching out to them for a consultation – which underscores the importance of a social media presence for divorce professionals.
“People who are out there sharing information for free are generally going to tend to be the kind of attorney that you want to work with. Maybe the attorney that you’ve never even seen their face until you walk into the consultation, you don’t trust that person as much. So you want to be transparent, helping people even if they are not going to be your client.”
-Rob Roseman, WTF Divorce Podcast
Tracy points out that many people don’t understand that there are different ways to get divorced and many types of divorce attorneys. She stresses the importance of ensuring that the attorney you hire for your divorce process aligns with your values. When answering questions and providing referrals in WTF Divorce’s DM’s, Kristy adds that many people don’t understand all their divorce options and feel like they would have approached divorce differently after going through it or after finding new resources online.
“It’s always important to let people know that they can change lanes. Quite often people find out about an amicable divorce after they have already filed for a divorce in the court system, they come across ADN and then decide to pivot to an amicable divorce. So parties also need to know that if you’re facing a divorce, you’re in the driver’s seat, this is your life, and so if things are not going the way that feels good to you, you have the right to change lanes and change direction.”
-Tracy Ann Moore-Grant, Amicable Divorce Podcast host and founder of the Amicable Divorce Network
The Amicable Divorce Network and WTF Divorce are aligned on the same principles, highlighting the vigorous member vetting process that both ADN and WTF Divorce are committed to. WTF Divorce’s website includes a directory of vetted divorce professionals for those seeking guidance. Rob also shares that visiting the WTF Divorce Instagram page can be a great source of education, as many divorce professionals are active in the comments of posts and answer questions. Additionally, Rob offers a weekly newsletter and a free ‘Divorce Skool’ online course, which walks you through every phase of divorce plus weekly calls with divorce, co-parenting, and dating coaches.
